BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY:

SMILE (Sensation and Movement Interaction for Life Experience) is an exciting new initiative based at the ARCOS Therapy Centre in Malvern. It is for the benefit of children with profound and multiple disabilities as well as those with learning and sensory impairment. SMILE provides a multi-sensory environment for calming relaxation and sensory stimulation as well as music and drama sessions. The SMILE Project provides a Sensory room with a “difference” not only does SMILE offer state of the art technology (not currently available in any sensory room in Worcestershire) it also provides play activities such as cooking, creative storytelling and messy play. These activities are designed to stimulate the senses helping to trigger new or existing experiences in the brain, assisting to make better connections for life experiences. The Smile Project is a stay and play facility that encourages parents to play and learn alongside their child with help and support from fully trained experienced staff. This approach to sensory, family learning helps to create a supportive atmosphere for all the family to enjoy.
Children attending the SMILE facility will receive ‘hands-on’ 1:1 support to enable participation and promote interaction with the sensory environment.

Hosting Belarussian children affected by the Chernobyl catastrophe for a health giving 4 week holiday in Malvern every year in June/July.  Two children stay together in local homes usually for 2 weeks.  Group of 10 10/11year olds with teacher.

Fund raising at least £6000 each year.

We provide support to communities in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, working with them to develop solutions to overcome the challenges they face and providing a’ voice’ for them so that they can help to influence change.

We can provide advice and support for village halls and community buildings, help with fundraising advice for community groups and activities, advise community planning groups, assist with environmental projects, make community organisations ‘fit for purpose’ and provide information about setting up and running social enterprises, co-operatives and ‘not for profit’ groups. We also look after the local Elmley Arts Grant fund.

We also play a role in health and social care, co-ordinating the Worcestershire Mental Health Link Network and providing information and support to local health organisations.

Home-Start South Worcestershire is part of the nationwide network of Home-Start schemes and works in the districts of Malvern Hills, Worcester City and Wychavon.

Home-Start schemes recruit, train, support and supervise parent volunteers who visit local families weekly at home to provide support, friendship and practical help. The families we help are in need of extra support for many reasons; illness, disability, financial stress, bereavement etc. Volunteers provide a listening ear and a helping hand, and through befriending the parents and children help the family give every child the best start in life.

We are setting up a support group in Malvern for people of all ages who have diabetes (both type 1 and type 2).  The aim of the group being for people who have diabetes to meet and give each other moral support, as well as having a social get-together.

Relate Worcestershire provides counselling to couples, families and young people, individuals plus sex therapy.  The organisation also delivers a wide range of training courses on relationships and communication to professionals, other organisations and the community.

The main centre is based in Worcester City where counselling is delivered 6 days a week (Monday – Saturday).  Counselling can also be accessed in Bromsgrove, Redditch, Broadway and Wyre Forest.

Upton Community Care is a registered charity staffed entirely by volunteers. It exists primarily to transport the elderly and infirm who have no other means of travel to medical appointments at surgeries, hospitals, clinics and day care centres. U.C.C. clients are mainly patients at Upton surgery which covers the area of Upton town, and the rural area including Severn Stoke, the Hanleys, Welland, Castlemorton, Berrow, Longdon, Stratford Bridge and Ripple. Our charges (July 2013) are 40p per mile (20p for bus-pass holders) for the complete journey, with a minimum charge of £3 (£1.50 with bus pass)

Our group promotes the knowledge of mental health issues. It provides support, practical advice, and useful information to relatives and carers looking after those with a mental illness.
