The new year often brings about new projects, new hobbies and new ideas. For schools that can mean promoting and encouraging students to take part in Duke of Edinburgh awards (DofE awards).
Duke of Edinburgh awards have been around for the last 70 years, encouraging young people to develop self-belief. Volunteering is a great way to grow confidence, skills and experience, regardless of age. But DofE is also a great opportunity to engage with young volunteers and to provide them with an introduction to the work of the charitable sector.
The biggest hurdle to finding DofE volunteering opportunities, for those under 16 years of age is insurance requirements. However, there are other ways to help find DofE opportunities. Getting involved in local sports clubs and offering to support coaching sessions is a great way to volunteer. The local library is another place to offer volunteering support. Offering to supervise your own young person might also open doors to volunteering.
Some charity shops offer behind the scenes volunteering opportunities, where younger people can volunteer under close supervision.
If you want to explore volunteering opportunities regardless of whether you are looking to complete your DofE awards, or would simply like to be part of something bigger, then get in touch with Malvern Hills Volunteering.
